A man in his 40s has died after being stabbed on one of south-west London’s busiest shopping streets, with a murder investigation now underway and a suspect already held by police.
Emergency services were called to The Broadway in Wimbledon shortly after midnight on Sunday, with the London Ambulance Service, London’s Air Ambulance, and Metropolitan Police officers all responding to the scene. Despite efforts to treat the victim where he was found, he could not be saved and was pronounced dead. His family has been informed and is receiving support from specialist officers.
Detectives moved quickly following the attack, locating and arresting a man in his 30s later that same night. He remains in custody on suspicion of murder. The Metropolitan Police has said it is not looking for any further suspects and is treating the incident as isolated.
The case has been handed to homicide detectives within the Met’s Specialist Crime Command. Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Jolley described the stabbing as a shocking act of violence and appealed directly to the public for help, saying no piece of information should be considered too minor to share.
Police are asking anyone who was in the area of Wimbledon Broadway around the time of the attack, or who captured anything on a phone or dashcam, to get in touch with the Metropolitan Police.
